The Garden

I've searched the web for organic gardening blogs and have found several that are based in places like Texas, Oregon, and Michigan. These are great but are almost completely irrelevant to SoCal.  While everyone else is harvesting stuff in October before the freeze, my garden has started producing again after the weather has cooled sufficiently.  Freeze?  It's New Years and I am still harvesting zucchini and heirloom tomatoes at the same time my broccoli and brussels sprouts are figuring it all out.  Last year my winter garden produced into May and I am still getting chard, although the plants are a little leggy by now.  This will take some thought and a bit of organization on the planning side.  Here are pictures of the summer garden. The fencing has to keep out gophers, squirrels, chickens and the occasional horse.  It's not so good at keeping out rats, grasshoppers, and other insects.
